Spaceliner

The 1960s was a great time for bicycles. There were dozens of companies and designs were unique. The sky was the limit, just as it was for automobiles.

Sears and Roebuck, as the company was known then, made the Spaceliner. The originals came with sprung froot forks, “tanks” with battery powered lights, and flowing lines that tied frame, chainguard and fender braces together. Best of all, the frames were chrome.

This example lived a tough life outdoors. Most of the chrome is pitted with rust. The tank was long gone. No restoration here, this bike needed to become a “rat rod” or muscle bike.

Here you can see the sprung front fork and the 24 volt Clean Republic hub motor. I bought the bike from a fellow in Springfield, Vermont in a group of a dozen bikes in various states. One was a 1970s Columbia Sports 3-speed which was quite unusable. It gave up the seat, handlebars and stem for this project. I have a front fender with a similar patina (a nice word for rust, don’t you think)? I’m not sure I’ll use it.
